Ceramic Studio Technician -

Work Exchange

  • This is a work exchange position. We are looking for someone that can work every Saturday, in exchange for free studio membership.

    We are seeking a highly skilled and knowledgeable Ceramic Studio Technician to assist with studio maintenance, kiln operations, and glaze preparation. This role requires good technical expertise in ceramics, including glaze formulation, firing temperatures, and health & safety best practices. The position is work exchange and suited to someone with a degree in ceramics and hands-on experience in a professional studio environment.

  • We are looking for someone that can work one day/ week, every Saturday from 9am to 6:30pm. In exchange, they get free studio membership at any of our studios.

  • Studio Maintenance & Cleaning:

    • Hoover and mop floors daily to maintain cleanliness.

    • Clean surfaces, workstations, and communal areas.

    • Empty, wash, and dry the sink trap with bleach before disposal.

    • Soak aprons and wash to prevent dried clay buildup.

    • Clean and return all boards, tools, and equipment to their designated storage.

    Clay Recycling & Preparation:

    • Recycle clay using a pugmill and plaster bat.

    • Follow safe lifting practices when handling 12.5kg bags of clay.

    Kiln & Glaze Operations:

    • Load and unload kilns safely, ensuring correct firing temperatures and proper labeling of work.

    • Remove glaze buildup from kiln shelves using an angle grinder (training provided, eye protection must be worn).

    • Apply batt wash to kiln shelves using pre-mixed batt wash.

    • Mix glazes in dry quantities following recipes, ensuring safe handling by wearing a P100 mask (technician must provide their own for hygiene reasons; paper masks and latex gloves provided).

    • Mix powdered glazes with water by the sink using a glaze mixer.

    Storage & Organization:

    • Store completed work on the correct shelves based on tasters, courses, and member projects.

    • Label and organize tasters and coursework in designated storage boxes with the correct course code or month of session.

    • Record tasters and coursework ready for collection in the black notebook.

    • Track and record members’ material usage for invoicing before distributing materials.

    Teaching & Member Support:

    • Assist with taster sessions and private throwing lessons (up to 6 people).

    • Help organize 4- and 8-week courses as needed.

    • Assist with the 1-week course, charged at the technician rate unless a group of 6 or more enroll.

    *These are general duties. If more tasters or throwing sessions are booked, you will have to prioritise the students sessions.

    Safety & Best Practices:

    • Follow best health and safety practices, including PPE use for glaze mixing, kiln operations, and studio maintenance.

    • Ensure safe handling of all chemicals and materials, including glaze ingredients.

    • Use a stepladder for high storage—no climbing on stools or tables.

    Requirements:

    • Degree in Ceramics (or equivalent experience).

    • Strong technical knowledge of glaze chemistry, kiln firing temperatures, and health & safety regulations.

    • Experience in a professional ceramics studio, including kiln operation and glaze mixing.

    • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks efficiently.

    • Comfortable with lifting and manual labor involved in studio upkeep.

    • Teaching experience in ceramics is a plus.
