Last Opportunity to Book a Glaze Technology Workshop with author Louisa Taylor

Join us for a one-day workshop led by Louisa Taylor from 10am to 6pm. Discover the essence of glazes and delve into the art of crafting them. Learn the fundamentals of glaze-making, from meticulous weighing and precise mixing to the creation of your own unique glaze profiles. Explore a variety of glaze types, including glossy, matte, maiolica ware, and special effects. Gain insights into firing techniques and temperatures, ranging from earthenware to stoneware, and explore oxidised and reduction firing processes. Understand the essential components of glazes, including flux, silica, and alumina. Engage in hands-on experimentation with provided test tiles and glaze ingredients, with results ready for collection the following week.

One Week Course

Beginner level

📍 Hammersmith

  • Starts every Monday

Learn how to throw on the pottery wheel and how to hand build with clay: pinching, coiling, slab building and pressing clay into plaster moulds with decorating slips and a glazing session to follow once all your work has bisqued.

Projects are self directed with expert guidance from our teachers and technicians.

Throwing / 4 or 8 weeks course

Level 2

Experienced level: You must already be able to centre and competently throw cylinders and bowls.

  • Wednesday 8th May 6-9pm

In this course we will learn how to make larger work throwing component parts, joining and assembling larger pots. Make a water jug from three thrown pieces / elements.

You will learn how to design and plan forms, weighing, measuring and preparing clay.

Throwing, Hand building & Decorating techniques 4/8 weeks course

Level 1 and Level 2


Mixed level

Mondays

  • Starts Monday May 6th 10.30am-1pm or 6-9pm

An introduction to a broad range of pottery techniques and surface decorating techniques for beginners when working in ceramics. This course teaches throwing and hand building with decorating techniques.

The course will include techniques with slip and engobe, inlay application alongside monotype transfer methods. We will also cover decorative and practical approaches to using glaze on bisqueware.

Intermediate Level 2: Throwing 4 or 8 weeks courses

Decorating Techniques 6 weeks course

Mixed level

  • Thursday May 23rd: 6-9pm

This course will cover a broad range of surface decorating techniques when working in ceramics. This six weeks is ideal for artists and makers to discover new techniques with slip and engobe, inlay application alongside monotype transfer methods. We will also cover decorative and practical approaches to using glaze on bisqueware.

Throwing 4 weeks course

Level 1: Beginners

📍 Barnes

  • Tuesday May 7th: 10.30-1pm/ 6.00-8.30pm

  • Saturday May 4th: 2-4.30pm

During this course you will learn how to throw a series of cylinder shapes on the pottery wheel to make cups, vases, bowls and plates. On the fourth session you will learn how to apply a glaze to a selection of your best work.

Corporate Team Events

📍Hammersmith

The 10-15 person group will last 1.5 -2 hours and during this time you can choose either to throw pots on the pottery wheel or to hand-build with clay at the table.

A 30 person taster will last three hours in duration. We will divide you into two groups with a dedicated teacher to support and guide you. This gives each group of 10 people the opportunity to learn how to throw a pot on the pottery wheel and how to hand build with clay. Each group works with a specialist teacher providing a demonstration to teach you how to work with clay.

Birthday Parties

📍Hammersmith or Barnes

Enquire about children’s parties either in our Hammersmith or Barnes studios. Choose whether to throw a pot on the pottery wheel, make plates or animal sculptures in clay and decorate with coloured slips. Two teachers will teach this class. A clear glaze will be applied to the finished work. Ready to collect 4 weeks after the party.
